This month’s BEAUTY CALL is a good one. A Banger. And to keep it in the theme of the holidays, these items also double over as superb gift ideas for your sisters, friends, cousins, girlfriends, ponies. Or ef that,

Sephora Collection Makeup Studio Blockbuster: $49.50

What you need to know:

- 96 eye shadow shades
- 84 shiny lip glosses
- 6 cream eyeliners
- 2 eyeliner pencils
- 3 blushes
- 1 bronzer
- 1 mascara
- 4 applicators

Every November Sephora puts out a new one of these, and yet, somehow, it doesn’t have a decent name yet. They can’t just go with Blockbuster, or anything “box” really because they carry the brand “smash box”. They should go with a one or two-word name. Something simple and memorable like “the cube” of the “Sephora Special” (there are no bad ideas in brain storming).

There are more colors than you will know what to do with. You go ahead and just toss the mascara - clump city. Also, if you don’t already own some basic brushes I’d pick up a couple so you can really enjoy this – the applicators provided are disposable.

Who wouldn’t love this Sephora Hello Kitty Brush Set? ($49) A monster, that’s who.

EVERY scent is amazing. And the packaging is the most beautiful shit I’ve ever seen.

My favorite (I don’t know, it’s pretty hard to pick a favorite though..) is their new scent, Calm

If you’re like me, and can’t pick just one you can buy a set of 6 tiny GORGEOUS glass bottles of fragrance.

$54 on the Lollia site. I checked Amazon and Ebay for you already – that is the best price. These bottles are so decorative they will look good on your vanity even when they’re empty.

I can’t even imagine how perfect these bubble baths are – $34 each. Oh look, fuggin’ OPRAH loves it.

I’ll take one of everything.

Item 3

Osis Dust it hair magnifying powder. $10 on Amazon

You want cray cray volume in your hair?

Sprinkle some of this in the crown of your hair and tease a little. You’ll look like a bombshell. Because it’s a powder, you can almost use it as a dry shampoo. This is great for 3-day hair that has a little bit of a grease sheen going on.

Last

Does your skin get shitty dry this time of year too? Our water kind of adds to this lovely seasonal issue: I step out of the shower and feel like my face is expanding through the skin or something. I would imagine it’s what getting work done to your face feels like – must. not. show. no. emotion.

It might be a good idea to switch to some gentler skin-care products for the winter

Clarins toner is gentle, and soothing. Hence toner/lotion. Toning Lotion with Camomile: $20 ignore the part where is says “texture: lotion” whoever thinks lotion is a liquid is special.

If you’re super dried out Queen Helene makes a super cheap ($5), super effective Olive Oil Mask that you can pick up at any Harmon, Rite Aid, CVS, etc.

Holiday Hairspiration

Wait, I seriously picked “Holiday Hairspiration” for the title of this post? What a cheeser!!

All bullshit aside though; this is serious…… How cute is this herr?!

I love the idea of adding a little extra touch to a simple bun. If you’re going to pick a time of year to wear a bow on your head I’d say the holidays are your chance.

Here is a great way to get a better bun:

Skip the curling iron, though. You don’t need that shit.

Here are some other ways I liked:

And while we’re on the topic of hair accessories:

I conveniently make them. You can own that deer comb here

Here’s how to style your hair like that:

1.  Take a small section of hair from the front of the ear and start twisting it towards the back of your head, twisting in more hair as you go. Cross the sections over each other in the middle of your head and pin them down. I like to make an “x” with the bobbie pins so they kinda lock onto each other in some sort of bobbie pin death grip.

2. Make a pony tail as close to that x as posssss.

3. Braid the pony tail and secure with a little dood elastic.

4. Make a bun by wrapping the braid around itself and secure with pins. Push the bobbie pins in slightly and then change angles to push it all the way in for more security.

5. Spray the shit out of that puppy.

6. Add hair comb.

Here’s a quick and simple little way to add a moderate amount of sparkle to your holiday manicure:

I used Essie’s Carry On, and one of those nail art polishes with the long thin brushes you can pick up at a dollar store.

I started off with two coats of Essie’s Carry On.

Then with the silver, I started at the center of the cuticle and followed it up towards the tip of the nail. The idea behind that is so most of the polish comes off at the starting point so you get a tapered effect as you brush up towards the tip. I did this a couple times because I wanted more glitter.

If you mess up your line just go back and re-shape it using the base color.

Winged Eyeliner (the cat eye)

I can remember the exact day I started doing winged eyeliner. I was in the 7th grade and we were studying the 60′s. We were required to dress up to give our presentations on our various topics (mine was Twiggy). At that point in my life the only things I really paid attention to where horses and the fact that my boobs weren’t getting any bigger. Makeup wasn’t even a blip on my awkward radar. I turned to my mother for help and ever since she busted out that black liquid eyeliner my fate was sealed.

As glamorous as this style can look, it can easily turn ugly:

There are a million tips and tricks but honestly, practice makes perfect.

I typically do a really thin line for daily use, but I really want to try a thicker, more dramatic look, especially because the holidays are right around the corner. I love this bold look on K-stew in W Magazine:

And of course, the always lovely Gwen Stefani:

Gwen’s makeup artist, Kathy Jeung, suggests tracing a business card to get the angles to match up; a little nugget of knowledge picked up from Glamour’s Winged out Eyeliner Tips and Tricks.

I’ve been through a ton of brands of liquid eyeliner (I’m serious when I say I’ve been doing my makeup like this since the 7th grade, so trust me when I say a ton!) The award for absolute best product out there goes to:

MAC’s Fluidline black eyeliner: $15, and lasts basically forever. Use with:

MAC 266 small angle brush: $19.50

The O.P.I Muppets Collection. Every. Color. I tested “Excuse Moi” (the pink sparkly one..I think second in on the right..) and it actually comes out exactly the way it looks in the bottle. It was the last bottle in the store for a reason – these colors are PERFECTION. I know, these run like, $8 a bottle -  BUT go here and get them for $6 ;)

Current Obsession:French Twist

One of the first things we learned when I took cosmetology in high school was how to French twist hair. I was pretty damn good at it. It’s such a chic, classic look. I’m not a tremendous fan of the tightly wound perfectly hairsprayed styles, but I am loving the look of a more tousled, messier ones:

 

 

 

 

Needing a refresher on how to achieve this style, I cruised the web.

 

 

I found these beatiful images and a tutorial on Hair Romance (There’s a TON of great styles there)

Oh okay – she makes this look like a cinch. I was feeling pretty confident having seen this, but it somehow didn’t really work for me! Maybe my hair is just too long to be put into a ponytail first? I remembered there being more bobbie pins involved, so I continued my search and found this little illustration:

 

Somehow this made more sense to me. I realized I haven’t seen a french twist since those cosmo classes and now I know why – it’s pretty damn hard to do this to yourself. All I want is for my hair to look like this:

 

And instead I wound up with this garbage:

 

With no time to try a second attempt, I somehow saved my efforts by pinning a flower brooch into this mess. Not what I was initially going for, but not a total loss either!

You’ve won this battle, French twist…but the war is not over
